All You Ever Wanted To Know About C.F.

Canadian Fermentation has been around much longer than expected when I first conceived the idea. It started with only a vague idea about what I wanted to accomplish. The site began after I moved back to Canada having spent ten years living in the United States, and it had come to my attention that I probably knew more – culturally, historically, politically and in any other way – about America as I did about Canada. This didn’t sit well with me, as I believe an individual should first and foremost know about the nation he calls home. Therefor Canadian Fermentation was born, to drive my personal research into the question, “What is Canada?”, as well as to have a creative outlet for the purposes of thrusting my dark thoughts upon the world.

Most of my initial posts tend towards ‘straight’, and, I believe, have a vastly different voice when compared to what I write now. Currently, if you haven’t noticed, Canadian Fermentation tends towards irreverent humour, satire, observation and pure silliness, with the occasional and rare serious post thrown in. The beginning was much more serious in tone, but quickly degenerated into posts about hookers, the supernatural, and the Cirellean take over of Canadian politics. In other words, it’s meant to be fun.

Often during the fun, though, I do try to make a point. Usually it’s a subtle point, probably too subtle most of the time, but I would rather the fun overwhelm the serious, than have the serious overwhelm the fun. When blogging for no money on one’s own time with no vision of ever making a cent off of the product, then fun has to be the utmost priority.

There have been several times when I came close to packing it in. Regular readers quickly realize that updates are sporadic and seldom. My guess, without actually calculating it, is that I post, on average, 2.5 times a week. What do you expect for free? Still, even with such a relaxed schedule blogging can often feel like a demand on one’s time.

I will usually try to respond to any comments made, with rare exceptions. My comments are always serious, as in I will never be sarcastic or caustic to a reader in comments on purpose, but I will play with comments that are funny. I am also interested in your blog, if you are a blogger so feel free to leave links. Usually links to your site are made automatically through WordPress, but sometimes the links don’t stick, for whatever reason. Feel free to post direct links in comments if you like.

Proposed topic: Canadian Bacon v. Normal Bacon: What do Canadians call “Canadian bacon”?

I forgot we’re going to have to have a Canamerican showdown regarding the proper spelling of color, favorite, theater, and other words that, when spelled in the canadian/british way by an American, make me judge them harshly and instantly label them as a pretentious ninny.

I won’t get on your case about it, however. You’re Canadian. You can’t help it.

Do you mean I can’t help “spelling that way” or that I can’t help being a “pretentious ninny”?

The spelling. Pretentious ninny has yet to be seen.

America requests that you answer the following questions (more to come as time and boredom go on):

    1. What color is your soul?
    2. If I sleep over at your house and get up in the morning with a craving for cold leftover pizza…what topping(s) will I likely find on the pizza in your fridge?
    3. Which came first chicken or the egg?
    4. Most embarrassing CD in your collection?
    5. You’ve gotta pole dance to pay the rent. What song are you coming out and shakin’ “it” to?

    Good Questions!

    1. The colour of my soul is ‘funky’. In the good way.

    2. Ham, pineapple and purple jello.

    3. A better questions is, which is tastier?

    4. I have an album called ‘Cocked and Loaded’ by the Revolting Cocks. It’s actually pretty good, musically, but I generally don’t show it to people (the cover has a woman wearing panties and holding a gun).

    5. Tough one. I’m gonna go with the theme to South Park. Or maybe Blame Canada.

Does the canadian myspace? I realize that’s taking our relationship to a whole new virtual level. But I would like to see your myspace (as long as you never mention this blog and “out” me to the public, i.e. the people I blog about behind their backs…but in a loving way.)

I do, actually, have a myspace account. I honestly don’t use it/check it very often–it’s mainly a way for me to keep in touch with some of my friends from Oregon–but you’re welcome to add me.

It’s under the name Odysseus. Can’t imagine there are too many people with that name around…could be wrong tho.

I want to apologize for any Canadierican hostilities I may have inadvertently contributed to.

Especially the whole M.C. Hammer thing.

Can’t we all just get along?

There shall never be peace between our peoples until we can learn to put aside our differences, especially regarding the M.C. Hammer thing – of which I am well aware and…um…not pretending to know what you are…uh…talking about…*cough*

I visited your blog and I was wondering if I can recommend it. Although ours is not a humor website, we can all use a good laugh in this world where there are a lot of things not to laugh about. I am sure my visitors would appreciate websites like yours. Let me know if this is ok. Thanks for your time and take care.

People often expound that there is no Canadian culture. I offer this simple example of Canadian culture being that feeling of relief you experience after you clear customs back into Canada.

You may have had a good time in the US, enjoyed friends enjoyed yourself thoroughly but now you are home!
